Social Infrastructure (Sporting Facilities) PDF Print E-mail

The major thing that frustrates me (and, as my daughter gets older, it will have even more of an impact on our lives) is the lack of social infrastructure in the area.

By Social Infrastructure, I mean facilities for the kids to play sport, to get out and socialize with each other, away from school and in a healthy environment. There are some areas of this electorate that are substantially lacking. Is your family missing out because you can't find a team for them to play on because there are not enough decent facilities for the Sporting Clubs to use? Is it impacting you to travel out of the area for your children to play sport, when in other areas you can almost walk to the nearest sporting oval.

Fair enough, some activity has happened in these areas in the last couple of years. We now have a couple more sporting facilities, but they aren't broad enough in the types of activities covered, and are far too little, and far too late to be in line with the growth of the community.

A lack of the facilities required, such as activity, indoor, aquatic and athletics centres, and venues for specific sports such as soccer, basketball, netball, cricket, tennis and football (to name just a few), will have real & tangible negative consequences that will affect an entire generation.

By improving the Social Infrastructure in the area, we create a healthy environment for our families.

  • Playing a sport means our children are less likely to suffer childhood obesity, sport gives them an opportunity to develop both physical skills; like coordination, and also social skills; like working as part of a team.
  • Sport gives families an opportunity to further develop social networks and spend time quality time together. When I was a child growing up mum would take me to netball whilst dad took my brother to soccer. Their roles would swap on some Saturday mornings, and it gave our my parents time with us as individuals to get to know us.
  • By giving our young people something to focus on they are less likely to fall off the rails. My understanding is that you pass on your values to your children by the time they reach about 7 years old.

Put simply, getting our children into a sport at a young age, gives our families an excuse to spend time together and we create a better community for the future.

We need action now.
