| Family Issues - a Family Impact Statement |
First, a couple of facts. This is a true family area, with the highest number of families (by %) of any council area in Victorian (77% of all household are married or defacto couples). Not only do we have one of the highest birth rates in Australia, but we also have one of the highest rates of new home constructions. This means that our population is growing at an incredilbe rate. As an example of this, the number of new school places for preps each year is exceeded only slightly by the number of post-prep children moving into the area. This is expected to continue for many years. We need to ensure that the facilities we have for families are the best they can be. Our issues are many and varied, from maternal & child health, pre-school and child-care issues, school planning and on-time completion, community centre planning, sporting facilties, and community group support, to name just a few. We could make a great start by including a Family Impact Statement with every council decision, policy, or strategy. (A Family Impact Statement isimportant to families as an enviromental impact statement is on our local enviroment). Action also needs to be taken to make both State and Federal Governments' aware of their responsibilities to Truganina, to help council meet its obligations to support families Community in Truganina better than it has to date.
